The Parrot
Recently, on a Sermon in Shalom TV, I heard the story of a parrot. The sermon was given by an Orthodox Priest. The story goes like this. Once upon a time there
was a parrot in a toddy shop. Toddy is an alcoholic beverage produced from palm trees. The parrot used to watch the people coming in and the actions inside. Of
cousre, people used to get drunk and act out of their mind. Once a 'kapyar' of the nearby parish bought it from the owner. He took the parrot to the Church and hung it on the verandah. The parrot was excited to be at the new place and started observing the activities inside the Church. Some weeks later, a friend of this parrot came and asked him "How is the new place? What is the difference?" The parrot answered, "Actions and Songs are different, but the people are the same."
Are we good only in the Church? Are we praising God only in actions? This is the question many people are facing nowadays. Churches are not just community centers and are not places where you have to act as good. Churches are places which has thee dwelling of the Almighty God. It is from the Churches that many learn
about faith and about God and decide to lead a better life. It is through Church that one will walk in the path of salvation delivered as a grace by our Lord. But nowadays, while struggling with the numerous needs of our daily lives, how often are we imitating the Word of God outside the Church premises? Is Churches a mere community gathering centre?
Question we all are facing is, are we Christians outside the Church? Are we missionaries of Christ in the outside world? This question is not coming out of pessimism, but of optimism with full faith that the required change in our faith communities will happen. Are we ready to be converted and to follow the Lord? Are we able to emit the True Light that is emitted from the Lord to us through the Holy Bible? Let us evaluate ourselves while we celebrate the Memorial Day of St. Thomas, the Apostle of India, through whom we received the Living Christ.
